In my childhood
memories of walking along the beach, colorful stones always caught my
attention, while my soles were constantly tickled by shells of different
textures. Many years later, revisiting that coastline, I discovered that the
sensory experience brought by these sediments had been replaced by a plethora
of plastic waste. In terms of environmental issues, human actions have
undeniably made unprecedented impacts on the Earth, as scientists have stated
that we have entered a new era known as the Anthropocene. However, the
scattered debris on the sand, in some way, causes a visual disruption to the
landscape, which, to me, is fascinating—a process of observation that elicits a sense of wonder, much like admiring
the vibrant fish scales in an aquarium.
As a result, I began to meticulously pick up the brightly colored debris stranded on the shoreline, cleaning them one by one. After recording their details through photography, I assigned them biological names based on the rules of binomial nomenclature. Then those classified documents were turned into the encyclopedia posters of marine species. Imagine these materials drifting a long time afterward in the deep ocean where life probably began, undergoing transformation and eventually becoming life forms—a scientific marvel of discovering new species in a future world.
These imaginative trash organisms float and sink within the fish tank. The assemblage of found objects which parodies organic forms with plastic waste, creates scenarios for people to “observe” and even “appreciate.” The small ecosystem in the water undergoes uncontrollable natural changes over time, as algae and microorganisms gradually spread. The aquarium scenario is a human attempt to immerse themselves in the romanticized beauty of the ocean, an attempt to select, classify, and nurture the natural world, with the colorful creatures becoming a source of sensory pleasure. However, nature is not ours to conquer.
